Sydney: Flamboyant Sri Lankan opening batsman Tillakaratne Dilshan is expected to play for New South Wales in Australia's domestic Twenty20 cricket competition next season. His signing for New South Wales requires the approval of the Sri Lankan board.

"Tillakaratne Dilshan is an outstanding all-round player. Being one of the world's most destructive batsmen in Twenty20 cricket, he brings a wealth of international experience to our team.

"We look forward to him playing a leading role in helping New South Wales win next season's Big Bash and thereby qualify for the Champions League," Cricket New South Wales chief executive David Gilbert said on Monday.

Dilshan was declared the player of the tournament in 2009 World Twenty20 in England, scoring 317 runs at an average of 52.83. He briefly joined Northern Districts province this summer for New Zealand's domestic Twenty20 tournament.

Australia's six provincial first-class teams are allowed to recruit two foreign players for the domestic Twenty20 competition. The top two teams in the tournament qualify for the lucrative Champions League Ternty20 tournament featuring the leading provincial teams from around the world.

New South Wales won the first edition of the Champions League but failed to qualify for the second edition of the tournament.
